William Bill Ackman: The Life of A Giant From Wall Street
What makes a man?
Unfortunately, there is no perfect answer to this question. One person may say a successful career. Others might say someone who looks after his family. Then there is a sector of people who look more at the soul and good deeds completed.
Let’s define someone who is successful.
The definition may vary, but at the end of the day, one just has to live up to their own abilities to live a happy and productive life. While one is bound to make mistakes in life, it is important to not be afraid to get right up on the horse and carry forward. One man has certainly been around the block and is not afraid to bet on himself no matter the consequences.
That man is William Bill Ackman.
While the majority of people would call Ackman a contrarian investor, ask him and he would prefer to introduce himself as an activist investor. With degrees firmly in hand, Ackman put his acquired knowledge to use when he created investment firm Gotham Partners with David P. Berkowitz in 1992. While the firm was mainly created to make small investments in public companies, Ackman decided to step outside of his comfort zone and make a push at relevancy in 1995.
When did Ackman become the man everybody knows him for?
Partnering with insurance and real estate firm Leucadia National, Ackman led a failed bid for Rockefeller Center. It may not have been successful, but it did draw investors attention to Gotham Partners. The added interest would eventually pay off with $500 million in assets by 1998. Things continued to grow for Gotham Partners as they became entrenched in litigation with numerous shareholders who owned an interest in the same companies Gotham invested.
As becomes the case with other high powered luminaries, it is hard to get to the top without making a few enemies. This was the case for Ackman as he found himself in a tiff with Carl Icahn in 2003 involving a deal with Hallwood Realty.
